Who are Cardiff Accessible Homes?
Within the Cardiff area, there are many families and individuals that require a home that has either been purpose built or adapted to meet their needs.
This relates to wheelchair accessible housing and properties that are suitable for people with mobility difficulties. Applicants may have specific needs that means there home should have features such as a level access shower, stair lift or through floor lift.
However, due to a short supply of properties built or adapted to necessary standards disabled people often have to wait a long time for a suitable property to become available.
Cardiff Accessible Homes was set up in 2003 to help applicants who wish to move from their current property into a property that’s suits their needs.
The project is currently supported and funded by Cardiff County Council, Cadwyn Housing Association, Taff Housing Association, United Welsh Housing Association, Hafod Housing Association, Linc Cymru and Cardiff Community Housing Association.
Project Aims and Objectives
In essence, the Cardiff Accessible Homes Project involves:
-
Manages a list of disabled people wanting to move to an adapted and / or accessible property in Cardiff.
-
Manages a register of adapted and accessible properties in Cardiff.
-
Manages a process that matches available properties to those applicants on the accessible waiting list.
Benefits and Features of the Project
-
Disabled applicants database / register in operation - the applicant database holds in depth information of several hundred applicants.
-
Accessible properties database in operation - the Property database holds information of over 1400 properties that have been identified as being adapted and / or accessible.
-
Matching process in operation - this process matches available properties to disabled applicants across Cardiff.
-
Management systems – the Project can identify types of properties and areas in demand and work closely with development teams to ensure these properties are built in ‘high demand’ areas.
Accomplishments and Achievements
-
Applicant Database - Extensive information regarding disabled applicants now exists and can be used to identify the need for adapted/accessible housing in Cardiff.
-
Property Database - Information regarding properties has and is still being obtained; this is done via the property assessment forms and information readily available to the project via the partners.
-
Letting homes to those who need them most - Applicants who have been re-housed via the project are varied and include wheelchair users and those applicants who have minimal mobility issues.
-
Better use of adaptations - In the past adaptations would have been removed from a property if no one was deemed to be suitable for the property. Since the Project started fewer adaptations are being removed due to the project having an extensive database of people requiring adapted / accessible housing. The benefit of having such a comprehensive list is that it reduces the time and cost of removing these adaptations and also increases the amount of adapted / accessible properties in Cardiff.
-
Fewer adaptations being removed from properties as the Project has identified a need to keep these adaptations in place. The need to keep such adaptations is confirmed based on the 245 applicants on the accessible housing register requiring some form of adapted / accessible property thus making better use of Disability Facility Grants (DFG’s).
-
Occupational Therapists - The Project makes best use of Occupational Therapist’s time – it ensures a holistic approach given to a service of this kind. Occupational therapy involvement is vital, assessments outlining applicant needs and referrals are completed to better match applicants to referred properties.
