LOUDOUN SQUARE LATEST
The £13 million Project has been launched!
The £13 million project has been launched to regenerate the heart of Butetown. Work is now underway and is expected to take approximately 3 years to complete.

The project is a collaboration between CCHA, Cardiff City Council and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and will deliver a new Health Centre, Community Hub, a new shopping parade and affordable housing in line with the outcome of extensive consultation with the local community. The plan has been drawn up by South Wales Architects Austin-Smith:Lord and construction is being undertaken by Leadbitter Homes. Extensive consultation has taken place with the local community over the last 4 years, and a wide range of views have been canvassed and taken into account wherever possible. |
Kevin Protheroe, Chief Executive said: “We’re delighted that the regeneration of Loudoun is underway and believe the benefit to the community will be huge. The community’s pride in their area is immense and it’s a privilege to be working on their behalf to bring new life to Loudoun. The community will also play a direct part in regenerating Loudon as local people will be recruited and trained to build the scheme. We believe the partnership between CCHA, the Council and the Health Board is a flagship for local cross-sector working, community-based housing and health care delivery. The Loudoun Square area is one of Cardiff’s poorest; many of the residents and business were there when it was originally opened and have witnessed its decline.
Abbey Ibrahim Hussein, local resident said: “People in the community feel like Loudoun’s been left behind and that the needs of local people have been forgotten – that’s now been put right. The new homes, health centre, shops and community facilities will by a major boost to the new area and we can’t wait for it to get going.”
Martin Roe of Austin-Smith: Lord added: “"Collaborative regeneration schemes such as this are amongst the most challenging and also the most rewarding projects that we work on. We are looking forward to utilising our own particular skills and experience to create an exciting and vibrant new development for the benefit of the local community. We see such projects as having a crucial role in meeting local community needs for high quality, affordable housing and access to important health and social facilities."

Sustainability is a paramount feature of the project, with the Health Centre, Community Hub and shops designed to achieve Breeam ‘Excellent’ rating. . The 62 new homes will be the most environmentally sustainable in Cardiff incorporating strategies such as harvesting rain water, Bio Mass fuelled heating and very heavy use of Green Guide ‘A’ rated insulations.
The Community Hub will have public facilities including a Contact Centre where Cardiff City Council services can be accessed.

Wellness at Work Roadshow a huge success....
Tuesday 25th May 2010 saw the Wellness at Work Roadshow roll into town for the second year. 2009 was deemed a large success so the new Wellness at Work Quality Improvement Project (W@W QIP) were under pressure to meet expectations. Taking on board what worked well the previous year and what was not so popular, the group worked hard on making the event bigger, more involving and increased publicity.
The result was very pleasing. More staff participated, a total of 63% of CCHA employees – which is tremendous.
There was advice on diet and nutrition, allergy testing, three varied types of massage, basic health screening, a variety of information stalls with freebies and other fun activities such as the human-powered fresh fruit smoothies and the Nintendo Wii.
The W@W QIP team were in attendance to set up, run the day, monitor the appointments and tidy up.

It is fair to say the feedback is indicating a huge success in three main areas – the healthy living message important to us all, the stress relieving treatments available and the social and fun element of meeting colleagues away from the work environment.

Over 55's Tea Party
The tables were laid; the helium balloons floating in the air with matching table clothes and decorations that set the scene for CCHA’s over 55’s Tea party. Tenants and staff were in fine voice singing along to ‘Roll out the Barrel, save all your kisses from me, Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree; with funny stories and jokes in between. The dance floor was full creating an unforgettable atmosphere where both tenants and staff strutted their stuff!
The masters of bingo; CCHA’s Chief Executive Kevin Protheroe and Matthew Thomas CCHA’s Housing Director entertained the crowd of 45 tenants with their calling skills. Two lucky winners took home a hamper each laddened with goodies. As the afternoon was one of the hottest this year the traditional tea, coffee, cloudy lemonade, ginger beer and dandelion and burdock went down a treat!
From champagne to jewellery; all tenants were entered into a free raffle draw most going home with prizes donated by CCHA staff and community.
A large iced sponge cake was cut to commemorate this event, shared with tenants and staff who sat down together, catching up on old times, discussing future events and a way forward for the introduction of CCHA’s ‘New Golden Club’ for the over 55’s.
