Dealing With Emergencies

It is important to know what to do when you encounter an emergency in your home:

Gas

If you smell gas, turn the gas off at the mains immediately. Open a window for ventilation. Do not use any electrical appliances, switch on an electric light or strike a match, as any spark could cause an explosion. Contact us immediately. Failing this, telephone Transco yourself, but tell us as soon as possible and explain why you had to call them.

Electricity

If the electricity fails completely or you receive an electric shock from any fittings, turn off the electricity at the mains and phone us immediately.

If the electricity to a particular socket or series of sockets fails, the circuit breaker may have temporarily cut off the supply. (circuit breakers automatically switch off the electricity when a fuse has blown). To check if this has happened:

  • Disconnect any appliances connected to the socket causing the problem.
  • Re-set the circuit breaker switch to ‘on’ (the switches will be near to the meter).
  • If the power does not return or the circuit breaker continues to break the supply, contact us.

Water

If you have a burst pipe or the water supply fails, turn off the water at the stop cock and telephone us immediately. If you cannot contact us, telephone Welsh Water. Contact us as soon as possible and explain what happened.

Location of main switches and stop tap

If you are unsure of the location in your home of the mains switches or the stop tap, please let us know. One of our staff will be happy to explain.

Fire

If a fire breaks out in your home, try to get your family out of the property straight away and call the fire service immediately by telephoning 999. If possible, try to contain the fire by closing the doors and windows. If a domestic appliance has caused the fire, turn off the supply at the mains.

Do not go back in until the Fire Officer tells you it is safe. If you live in a property that has a lift, do not use it if a fire starts.
